Role Purpose

Salesforce Marketing Cloud Architect who will lead  architecture, development, and optimization of dynamic email communications and multi-channel automations within Marketing Cloud. 

Key Accountabilities

  • The architect is expected to design and oversee complex implementations, integrations, and optimizations within SFMC. The architect must understand both the platform’s capabilities and how to align them with business needs
  • The role will architect, design, build, and test email and mobile communications and multi-channel customer journeys within Salesforce Marketing Cloud, leveraging Content Builder, Data Extensions, Journey Builder, Automation Studio, and Mobile Studio.
  • Lead and mentor a team of email developers, providing technical guidance, code reviews, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Strong understanding of Data Extensions, data modeling, segmentation strategies, and data hygiene best practices within SFMC.
  • Experience designing and implementing REST and SOAP API integrations between SFMC and other systems (CRM, data warehouses, third-party platforms).
  • Expertise in responsive email design, dynamic content creation, A/B testing, and personalization techniques.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on SFMC tools and technologies, including AMPscript, Server-Side JavaScript (SSJS), SQL, GTL, and API integrations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, data, IT, and business stakeholders to translate campaign requirements into scalable, maintainable, and compliant technical solutions.
  • Drive innovation in email and mobile communications by identifying opportunities for automation, efficiency improvements, and enhanced personalization.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (CAN-SPAM, GDPR, CCPA) and security best practices.
  • Manage resource allocation, project timelines, and workload distribution within the email development team.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation and training materials to support SFMC architecture and development standards.
  • Participate in strategic planning and contribute to the marketing technology roadmap.

Key Skills & Experiences

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Marketing Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, including deep expertise in AMPscript, Journey Builder, Automation Studio, Content Builder, Data Extensions, and Mobile Studio.
  • Proven experience in a managerial or technical leadership role, mentoring junior developers and leading complex SFMC projects.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL, Server-Side JavaScript (SSJS), GTL, and API integrations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of email marketing best practices, including A/B testing, personalization, segmentation, and responsive design.
  • Experience with accessibility standards and advocating for inclusive communications.
  • Experience managing global translations and multi-regional campaigns preferred.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders and deliver large-scale projects on time.
  • Solid understanding of data privacy laws and compliance requirements.
  • Salesforce Marketing Cloud certifications are highly desirable.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the email marketing landscape, principles, and industry best practices – including global data privacy laws
  • Strong marketing automation strategy and implementation experience with email products, CRM tools and systems
  • Experience interpreting marketing program results, identifying cause/effect trends in executions and adapting best practices into future campaigns
  • Ability to develop and present data-driven recommendations successfully, promote items persuasively, and shape the opinions of others
  • Experience engaging and influencing cross-functional working partnerships in a global organization
  • Experience of working within a complex business with a range of stakeholders with different needs
  • Ability to maintain a service-oriented team culture and mindset, that delivers consistent, high quality work for IHG’s complex stakeholder group
  • Creative problem solver that can frame issues effectively for leadership
  • Ability to prioritize work based on alignment to broader IHG commercial objectives
  • Strong project management skills to juggle multiple projects often having tight deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills with extreme attention to detail, accuracy and accountability
  • Strong interpersonal and above-average communication skills
